These are some useful tools in my work that I would like to share.
Websites
- WordReference, the well-known dictionary
- Thesaurus, a synonyms dictionary
- Merriam-Webster, English dictionary with syllables splitting. In case you don't trust LateX' hyphenation
- Linguee, for translations within context
- Forvo, for checking pronunciation
- Detexify, or how to find the name of a symbol in LaTeX
- A Web Whiteboard, for collaborative drawing. Quite nice when you are Skyping with someone
- dblp, a bibliographic service specialized in computer science. You can easily see the works of a researcher and export BibTeX citations
- SciRev, for reviews of journal scientific review processes. Check it before you submit a paper
- SHERPA/RoMEO, for brief information about publishers conditions. Check it also before you submit a paper
- Sci-hub, a lot of research papers available for direct download [☠ illegal]
- Barak Pearlmutter's document, a concise guide for reviewing a scientific paper. The world would be a better place if every reviewer read this!
Android apps
-
Adobe Acrobat, for commenting PDF files. I prefer it against printing and writing on papers
-
@Voice Aloud Reader, TTS (text-to-speech) for PDF files. I proofread my papers also listening to them!
