About

Hello, my name is Luc Giffon.

I am a PhD. student in Machine Learning in the Qarma team under supervision of Hachem Kadri, Stéphane Ayache and Thierry Artières.

My research interests are in compressing machine learning models. I aim at re-defining models so that they would take fewer memory space or computing operations while not impairing their performance. In particular I am working on learning fast-transforms in place of regular transform matrices.

Work Experience

October 2017 - Present

Aix-Marseille Université
PhD. Student in the QARMA team of the LIS lab
For my research studies, I have been working on Deep Learning and Kernel Methods from both the theoretical and experimental point of view which has led me to get a deep understanding of those two families of methods.
I have been teaching various computer science related fields in the Centrale-Marseille Engineer School.
I also participated to some popularization events such as the Experimentarium.

February 2017 - July 2017

EuraNova Marseille
Research Internship
I have been working on the Anomaly detection problem using Kernel Methods techniques. In particular, I was interested in the case where the concept of anomaly may vary over time, a phenomenon known as Distribution Drift which is common in most of real-life scenarios.
Education

2015 - 2017

Aix-Marseille Université
Fundamental Computer Science

Master's Degree

In the first year of this Master, I needed to catch up my lack of knowledge in Computer Science and I have learned the basics in many fields such as: Networks, Software Engineering, Complexity, Database management, Web development. I showed very fast progress which has led me to the top of my class.
In the second year of this master, I specialized in fundamental computer science in order to get a deeper understanding of computer science. In particular, I focused my work on Machine Learning and DataMining.

2014 - 2015

Aix-Marseille Université
Biology

First year in Master BBSG

In this master, I've got more advanced knowledge in BioInformatics and Genomics. I discovered computer science during this year and spent a lot of time learning my first programming language Python. This has led me to change my education field from Biology to pure Computer Science and then to Machine Learning.

2013 - 2014

Aix-Marseille Université
Biology

Bachelor's Degree in Cellular Biology

This bachelor was the most common and general one in the field of Biology in Aix-Marseille Université, one of the biggest public Universities in France.
I was particularly interested in Molecular biology, Genomics and Evolution theory. This has oriented me to the Master BBSG which focused on those fields.

2011 - 2013

Université de Strasbourg
Biology / Bio-Technologies

Senior Technician Certifcate

I've learned the basics in biology and, in particular, what are the common techniques used for manipulating micro-organisms in a laboratory.
